December 2016 Newsletter - Part 2
2016-12-20

Well done to our 4th class and 6th class boys who took part in a soccer and Gaelic Football challenge last week versus Barnaderg NS. The boys represented our school excellently. Thanks to Mr. Reilly for working with the boys. Christmas Plays / The month of December has been filled with creative drama in Maree N.S. as the Junior infants, Senior infants and 6th class treated us to wonderful performances of their Christmas Plays. A huge thank you to Ms. McGrath, Ms. Kelly, Ms. Fahy, Breda, Majella & Pauline for preparing the classes so well! Nativity Play / second class will perform the annual nativity play in Maree church at 7 os' clock on Wednesday, 21st December. The children from 3rd to 6th will sing in the choir in what promises to be a wonderfully festive occasion. We are very fortunate to have such a talented and hard-working staff who prepare the children so diligently. Thanks to Ms. Pettit, Ms. Smyth and Ms. McGrath for preparing the children. All Welcome. The first preparation Mass for 1st Holy Communion took place on December 3rd in Maree Church. The masses are part of the Do This In Memory of Me? programme which is designed to prepare pupils and their families to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion. There will be 4 masses in total, details of the next mass will issue in the New Year. Thanks to Ms Pettit for her hard work with the children. Our infant classes had a number of special visitors over the past few weeks teaching us all about People Who Help Us?. Paramedics Brendan Os' Grady and Robert Burke, Garda Joe Hirst, Nurse Julie Os' Leary, dentists Dr Cormac Collins and Dr Emily Clarke, adult education assistant Lorraine Nolan and consultant radiologist Dr Derek Lohan all visited our infant classes to talk about their various areas of expertise. The children loved the visits and we thank everyone who gave of their time so generously. Connacht Visit: Tuesday 13th December was a very exciting day in Maree NS as Pat Lam and the entire Connacht Squad visited the school to meet the children and speak about the importance of working as a team! The children and staff were thrilled to meet the players and coaching staff and it is a day that will live long in our memories. It was also lovely to get a mention in the match day programme! A huge thank you to Pat and his team for taking the time to visit. Medical conditions / as mentioned in the November Newsletter, please inform us if your child suffers from any medical condition that we should be made aware of. There is a great variety of activities ongoing in our school; work continues with Gaelic games coaching, tin whistle, Spanish, yoga, choir, knitting and sewing every week. Thanks to Jacqui, Monique, Theresa Donoghue, Mary Dooley, Mary Finn, Noreen Dooley , Gearid McInerney, Malachy Black, Mr. Reilly, Gerry Spellman, Ms. Hannon, Breda Hanniffy & Ann Nolan for all your hard work. School Orchard. We have now a school Orchard! A huge thank you to the Green School's committee, led by Ms Sinnott and to Ms Pettit for organising the planting of ten fruit trees at the school a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to all the past and current pupils, parents and staff who turned up on a bitterly cold Saturday to help with the planting. This will be a lovely feature of our school when the trees mature. Emails / we aim to communicate more by way of email in the future, it is a cost effective means of communication and fits into our green schools programme of reducing the use of paper. Please ensure we have your current email address. Contribution from Past Pupil / we were delighted to receive in November a very generous donation of 3 Ipads from a past pupil. It is a great sign of the high esteem that past pupils hold the school in, that they wish to give something back. The devices will be invaluable for us, especially in complementing our special needs programme. Our 6th class pupils were very excited to have Galway Hurler Niall Burke, visit the class two weeks ago and teach some lessons on healthy eating and on working as part of a team. Thanks to Niall for giving his time and sharing his skills with us. Bell Blessing / On the 8th of December our 5th and 6th class took part in the ceremony to bless the new bell in Oranmore Church. It was a fantastic occasion and we were delighted to be part of it. The ceremony was led by Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, Eamon Martin, the children took a full part in the ceremony including a welcome note, readings, prayers of the faithful and also performed beautifully as part of the choir. We even got a chance to ring the bell after the ceremony. The children all voted to choose a name for the bell with Nicholas? being the clear winner. The time of year may have been an influence!! A Note from Dermot & Joan As we approach the season of Christmas, I wish to say a huge thank you to everybody for everything during an eventful 2016. I refer in particular to the huge effort that went into the preparation for our retirement party back in October. It was an amazing occasion and we will never forget it. The attention to detail was incredible from the setting of the tables, the fabulous decorations, the marquee, the well thought out gifts, the food (the savouries were awesome, the cakes sinfully gorgeous), the beautiful photo albums, power-point, the invitation cards, the posters and media advertising, the children's artwork etc. We thank everybody for the extremely generous gifts and also the speakers on the night for their kind words and acknowledgements. We leave Maree, but the many great memories particular of the children over the years will remain with us forever. Once again thanks to one and all for your good wishes and generosity. Maree school is blessed to have such supportive parents, wonderful staff, progressive community and a very proactive Board of Management. We wish you and your children, as well as Mr Gorman and staff, the very best for the future. Regards, Dermot & Joan

Dermot's retirement speech
2016-10-18

Retirement party for Dermot Cleary, Principal, and Joan Reidy, Deputy Principal, hosted by Maree Parents' Association on Saturday, October 15th. The following is Dermot's address to the 400+ attendees. Board of Management, Parents Association, colleagues, parents, past-pupils, past colleagues, friends - Anybody who knows me well (which is just about everybody here) knows that I am seldom stuck for words. But for once I am rendered speechless by the effort that has obviously gone in to preparing for tonight. It should not be any surprise to me, given that I know the track record of parents and Parents' Associations over the years. I was not privy to the preparations for this event so I really didns't know what to expect. Miss Reidy asked me yesterday if I knew anything. I said that I didns't but that I would resort to Google for hints. Sure enough I came upon a site advertising the event and it had four 'likes' and it also said that eleven people were going. So I took an educated guess and told Ms Reidy that if the Board and the teachers came there would be around 30 present in total. I came to Maree in October 1986, thirty years and two weeks ago. Maree has changed a lot since but even back then I could see that it had a community spirit and an identity unrivalled anywhere in County Galway. The first function I attended was exactly 30 years ago, the official opening of the Maree Community Centre ie the hall we are standing in right now. It was probably one of the first in the county and was an indication to me of the good will and determination of the people. In 1986 the shop in Maree was run by the Murphy family who live next door to Grealy's shop. The old church was still in existence. The new one had not yet been built. None of the pitches as we now know them existed back then. The pitch we used was a lovely, long, green field in Middle Third a couple of hundred metres past Noel Madden's (now H West Motors). The dressing rooms were a row of white-thorn bushes and ash trees that grew in the ditch. The toilets were in the same area, a few bushes a little further away. Since those times Maree has a new church, a covered astro turf pitch, two tennis courts, a basketball hall, several pitches, dressing rooms and, to ice the cake, a lovely new school. I have publicly thanked Maree Community Development Association many times in the past. Although personnel have changed a few times the good will towards the school has remained constant. We had use of their hall for PE and other events before we had our own facilities. When the new school was being built we had access to the building site, we had storage space, play area and car parking at all times. We can never thank them enough for all their kindness. The team at Grealy Stores have always been a huge support to us over the years. We thank them and wish them continued success in the great business they have built up in the heart of the Maree area. I am delighted that my mother was able to attend tonight. I owe a great debt of gratitude to her and to my late father for giving us the opportunity to go on to further education. We grew up (all nine of us) in the 60s and 70s (that's the 1960s and 70s, not the 1860s). Things were changing slowly but not everybody at the time got the opportunity to go to college. My parents made great sacrifices to enable us to grasp that opportunity. My youngest sister Winnie is also in attendance and she and I have a special understanding as I actually taught her in 3rd class in my very first teaching job back home in Kilconnell in 1981. My mother has to rush off to babysitting duties but we are lucky she managed to get time to come even for a little while. If her dance class had been on we would have had a 'no shows'. So thanks, Mam, for everything and for the guest appearance. I want to acknowledge my predecessor, Bridie Pettit, who is here tonight and looks so well she could easily pass for being a current principal. In 1986 she took over the principalship from Seamus MacDonagh (Seamus has since gone to his reward). I was her first appointment. She took a chance on me and the rest is history. The fact that she picked me showed of course just how astute she was. {clap here} She deployed me as 5th and 6th class teacher where I remained until my appointment as principal in January 2004. Bridie went on to make the school the wonderful, happy, child-centred place that it is today. Moira and I are privileged that our own three children, David, Katelyn and Danielle, attended and were very happy in Maree school. They made many friends and were very well prepared for second level. They benefited from all the advantages of a rural, co-ed, non-uniform, progressive school where the children are number one at all times. The girls got very involved in sport with both Maree school and Oranmore Maree Club, all of which has left them with very fond memories. David would love to have been here tonight but he is thinking of us from San Francisco where he is employed by Google. In 2007, while still only 18, he set up the school website from scratch. We bought a .IE domain and he built it from there. He administered it voluntarily for over nine years up to handover to Mr Gorman a couple of weeks ago. The website is a mine of information and will be an important historical source in years to come. David's interest in I.T. began in Maree school when Mrs Pettit, in her wisdom, began purchasing PCs when only a handful of schools had moved in that direction. I wish to acknowledge David's contribution of his time over the years. I mentioned sport a little earlier. I inherited a school with a very rich tradition. There had been six titles secured before I came in 1986 and I was fortunate that, with great help from teachers and parents, we added twenty-two more in the ensuing years. But while the wins were nice, we always enjoyed the journeys and for me the sight of the green and black or the blue and navy taking to the field always did, and always will, cause a flutter to the heart. One of my greatest boasts to other principal colleagues was in relation to our Parents' Association. Their preparation for tonight, with co-operation from the teachers, is reflective of how they always carried out their business. The various Parents' Associations over the years delivered in the style you see here tonight. A few examples: - The gravel path from the Community Centre to the old school. - The Christmas Fairs and Book Fairs. - Traffic Duty while the new school was being built. - The school playground and play equipment. - The handling of the official opening of the new school. - The movement of equipment from the old to the new school. Joe and company, I salute you on behalf of myself and Ms Reidy for yourpositive support for the school always. We will never forget tonight's party. As for Joan Reidy, what can I say? A true friend, colleague, Deputy Principal, nominee to the Board and, above all, a peerless teacher, no words can adequately pay tribute to her. My own children were taught by Joan and still speak about her with great respect. She was always early to school and I have observed her many times hauling up some of the (innocent) early arrivals twenty minutes before class officially began to give extra help or consolidation of the previous day's work. Her teaching never stopped from the beginning of the day to the end, all year round. Among her many 'extrass' were the Christmas Nativity Play, the Confirmation and Communion choirs and much much more. She was the voice in my ear, always telling me what was coming up and how I should be preparing for it. Some of Joan's family are here tonight. Her sister, Mary, her nieces, Fiona and Barbara, nephews, Brian and Jerry, Brian's wife, Yvonne, Mary's husband, Naoto as well as Barbara's fianc, Stephen. You are all very welcome. As I said in my Summer speech, the factory that made Joan Reidy closed down because the quality of parts was too expensive. Indeed all of Joan's siblings became teachers. Michael is a Science teacher in Dublin and Mary is a primary teacher in New Quay. Her late sister, Breda (another Joan), was one of the finest to ever grace a Connemara school. I wish Joan the best in her retirement. In our recent inspection all my teachers got ten out of ten. Joan didn't make the ten, she scored eleven! To my former colleagues of the recent past and indeed all colleagues with whom I worked I want to say a sincere thanks. I include in this all ancillary staff, visiting teachers, speakers, coaches and so on. I always got a lot of credit for the school but they were the ones at the coalface who shared their various talents every day to give the children the broadest possible education. Back in June the school staff brought us on a fantastic night out. They pulled out all the stops and gave us a night to remember forever as well as some very generous gifts. I have to say that I had not been made feel so special since the day of my own wedding. Afterwards Ms Reidy and I concluded that they must have loved us to bits! Not for one second did we entertain the thought that they were delighted to see the back of us. It is most unusual and unique for so many members of a B.O.M. to serve a 2nd term not to mind serving for three, four or five terms in what is a totally voluntary body. I want to thank the Board for their help, their trust in me and their loyalty and support over 30 years. Obviously our finest hour was when we managed to get the new school built, but a lot of disappointment and setbacks over the years would have broken the spirit of others. But not our Board. In times when I was in despair of ever progressing there was always some member to offer a positive word. We also had great fun together and got along very well, each bringing his/her own talent to the table. I thank each and every member, current and past, and all chairpersons back over the 30 years for their voluntary service. It is said that behind every successful man is a great woman. I had my fantastic staff of mainly women. I had Joan Reidy. I had Ann in the office and there probably isn't a better secretary in Ireland. But I have a home also and when you take on the role of principal you take on a 24/7 job. This was especially true during the four years leading to the completion of the new school. At night I would be on the laptop for hours responding to the builder, the architect, the Department of Education and Skills and so on. Fortunately my wife, Moira, was very understanding. Fortunately also she liked her TV. Appropriately and aptly enough during those years while I was at my busiest her favourite show was 'The Good Wife'. I thank her for her patience but it must be said that she too is grateful to the school for how it moulded our children. I want to finish tonight by remembering those who cannot be with us. Our many past pupils and parents at home and abroad who would love to celebrate with us tonight but for one reason or another cannot be here. They are in our thoughts. I also want to acknowledge staff members and community members who have been recently bereaved. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and indeed with all loved ones connected with the school who have been called to their reward over the years (too many before their time). And finally finally, a funny story. Many people raised an eyebrow when they heard I was retiring a little early. Here is one incident which might have made me think. In 1988, at age 28, I went into a supermarket in Galway on a Friday evening and purchased a few items including a bottle of wine. The lovely, young girl at the checkout asked me for I.D. I thought for a minute and said to her "I'm not at the airport am I?". The licensing laws had been updated and the girl was only doing her job but I assured her I was 28 and not under 18. Roll on to last year I was at a checkout on the same premises and the lovely, young girl (not the same girl) asked me if I could manage or if I needed a hand packing the few bits and pieces. What a difference 28 years had made. I thought there was a message there for me. And so to Mr Gorman. You have inherited, and deservedly so, the crown. Thankfully it is not the crown of thorns. You have a most fabulous group of children. You have an outstanding staff. You have supportive and enthusiastic parents, P.A. and B.O.M. You are in the best community in Galway. I wish you every success and happiness going forward. Thanks again to everybody. Enjoy the night. Dermot.

As the school year begins I would like to take this opportunity to wish all staff, parents, Board of Management and especially the children the very best for the year ahead. In particular I wish Mr. Gorman good luck in his new role as principal of Maree school. I have been busy filling him in on what wonderful children he will have under his care and I know that everybody is going to make him very welcome. We will be operating the scheme for Senior Infants to Sixth Classes again for the school year 2016/2017. This year the rental scheme is exceptional value as we are investing a substantial amount of money in the Oxford Reading Scheme for use throughout the school. The rental fee is as follows: 10 per child for Senior Infants, First and Second Classes 15 per child for Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes Please send in the money in an envelope with your child's name on it to the class teacher by Monday, June 27th. I would like to thank Ms. Reidy for all her hard work in organising this scheme. D. Cleary.

Cakes for Cadan
2016-06-19

Many thanks to all who supported the school staff in their fund-raising cake sale in Maree school for Baby Cadan Geraghty today. The total raised was in excess of 1,800 which shows another example of the generosity of the Maree people. Well done to the staff for sponsoring and preparing the prizes, and for all the hard work preparing the event. Many thanks to the sponsors, Loughwell Pet Farm and Shannon Heritage (Bunratty Castle and Ailwee Caves). If anybody feels like a drive some summer Sunday with your family, these places get the 'thumbs up' from all the children in our school. Thanks also to all who baked and/or donated cakes, lucky dips, etc for the sale and to those who helped in any way. The following is Cadan's story as told by our past pupil, Sorcha Hanniffy, who works with Cadan, and who did the Dublin City Marathon recently in aid of him. Cadan's story Cadan Geraghty is 21 months old. Cadan suffers from two extremely complex and rare life-limiting chromosomal abnormalities, Jacobsen's Syndrome (a deletion of q11), and the other abnormality is an unknown duplication of q12. Cadan is the only ever known worldwide case to be recorded to have both diagnosis. Cadan's brain never fully formed, leading to added neurological, physical and visual complications. This is extremely hard for Cadan's parents, Brian and Joanne, and not to forget his older brother, Cian, as they do not have any medical research to help guide them with Cadan's battle. What they do know is that his physical, visual and mental life style will be very limited as he will also suffer from many more medical problems along the way. Because Cadan's muscle tone is very weak, he cannot as of yet support his own head, and he requires many pieces of specialised equipment that are extremely expensive and are not all funded by the HSE. Cadan is currently cared for by the nurses of the Jack and Jill foundation up to 10 hours respite per week. When Cadan turns four, he will no longer be entitled, so Joanne and Brian will have to fund any extra care needed for Cadan. As Cadan grows, he will need new equipment and housing needs will also change, which are not all grant aided. You can see why we are so appreciative of your efforts in turning out today to support the fund-raiser. Well done to all. Anyone who didn't get the opportunity to attend the event on Sunday may still make a donation. Please feel free to send it in to the school. We have a huge admiration for Cadan's family, for how long they are coping under the circumstances.

Parents' Association Social Night: My thanks to the Parents' Association (P.A.) for a very enjoyable Social Night in Maree Community Centre last Saturday. A very generous cheque for 8,000 was presented to the school from funds raised by the Parents' Association activities during the year. As always we are extremely grateful to the P.A. for all their hard work and efforts. Every cent of the funds raised goes back to the children. This year it subsidized the Baboro trip (down from 11.30 to 5 per child), the school tours (down from 20.10 to 15 per child), yoga classes, Spanish classes and music class. We will have exceeded the 8,000 but it is all to the benefit of the children. We are very thankful to the Parents' Associations over the years and to all who support their fundraising events. School Tours: School tours on Friday all depart at 9am so children should be at school at the normal time. Return times are expected to be as follows: Junior & Senior Infants 1:30pm-1:45pm; and 1st to 6th classes: 2:30pm-2:45pm.

Pat Lam took time out today to visit Maree School with the Guinness PRO 12 trophy. Pat thanks the kids for the big send-off he had received from them last week ahead of their big game. School principal, Dermot Cleary, congratulated Pat and all the team on their outstanding success while also acknowledging the wonderful and very positive support given to the school by Pat's wife, Stephanie, ever since their two lovely children, Josiah and Beth, enrolled in the school three years ago. {gallery}guinness_pro12_cup_2016{/gallery} He went on to say that apart from altogether from rugby, the Lam family have been a 'great addition to Maree community'. Pat stayed for well over an hour talking to the children and signing autographs. Letter from the Principal
2016-05-12

Dear Parents, Many of you will have read the summary of the Whole School Evaluation (WSE) on the school website. You will have noted that the inspectors were very positive in their feedback with regard to all aspects of our school. I was pleased for the staff, the Board, the Parents' Association, the parents and particularly the children that we got such a favourable acknowledgement. It was a great honour for me to have had the opportunity to lead the school through this inspection and for all parties to have their contribution recognised. Indeed it added to the many privileges that have been bestowed upon me during my years in the school. So after thirty happy years in Maree NS, twelve and a half of which were as Principal, I believe it the time is right for me to retire. Ms. Joan Reidy has also decided to step aside after her thirty four years of dedicated service. We will both be officially finishing on August 31st this year. The reason for this early notice is so that the Board will have the time to make appointments. You can rest assured that after the appointment is made I will be working closely with my successor to ensure a seamless transition. It is a magnificent honour for me to be Principal of Maree school. There have been many high points over the thirty years. Among the topmost of these was undoubtedly the grant of approval for the building of the new school after seventeen years lobbying. Now we have a find school building, but it is only as good as the people in it. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated, talented and hard-working staff that is always prepared to go the extra mile. The support of loyal colleagues has been unwavering at all times. The goodwill, hard work and exemplary behaviour of all our students has made working with them rewarding and joyful. In addition our parents could not have been more supportive. Equally the Parents' Association over the years have been extremely helpful and have done wonderful work for the school. I could not have asked for better support than that given to me by my deputy, Joan Reidy. Ms. Reidy and I have been fortunate to have been on the Board of Management during a very busy and rewarding period while we campaigned and eventually succeeded in getting the new school built. We cannot thank the members of the Board enough for their dedication to the cause, bearing in mind that the Board members are all serving in a voluntary capacity. We have always had the support of the wider community of Maree. Indeed Maree is known for its legendary community spirit. I am indebted to many people from the community who were always willing to help us out no matter what was required. In this regard we benefited over the years from the generosity of Maree Community Development Association in sharing their facilities with us. The recent WSE came in perfect time for me and for the school community. It was wonderful for me to see, before I exit stage left, that the staff, children, parents and board got such an overwhelming acknowledgement of all the effort that everybody puts in every day to make the school the place of learning the inspectors found it to be. For now it is business as usual. We have lots to look forward to in the next two months with matches, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, tours, Sports Day and maybe even a little bit of school work thrown in for good measure. May God continue to bless all our work in the coming weeks. Regards, Dermot.

Whole School Evaluation
2016-05-03

Dear Parents, As you are aware a Whole School Evaluation (WSE) was carried out in our school recently by two inspectors from the Department of Education and Skills (DES). The inspectors met the Board, the staff and representatives of the Parents' Association (at separate meetings) before and after the inspection. The inspection itself went on for three and a half days during which time the inspectors looked through everything in great detail. Teaching and learning were examined in each class and they also perused our mandatory policies in both administrative and curricular areas. At our post-evaluation meetings on April 28th the inspectors gave a massive endorsement of the quality of teaching and learning in the school. They were loud in their praise of the exemplary behaviour of the children and of the high academic standards they were achieving in every class setting. They were also highly complimentary of the Board especially for their dedication to the building of the new school. Due and deserved reference was made to the unstinting support role played by the Parents' Association and the parents in general in every aspect of school life. The surveys which were done during the evaluation were examined in detail by the D.E.S. in Marlborough Street. The results show that an overwhelming majority of parents and children are very positive about the quality of education and about the welcoming atmosphere in the school. In actual fact 100% of parents 'agreeds' or 'strongly agreeds' that there was a good atmosphere in the school. As the happiness of the children is our number one concern at all times, this is a fantastic affirmation. As is the case with all worthwhile evaluations, the inspectors had recommendations on how we could build on our success and make improvements going forward. We openly welcome these suggestions just as much as we appreciate the resounding plaudits the school received during and after the inspection. I would like to compliment the staff (teaching and ancillary), the Board, the parents and most of all the children for their contribution to making our school what it is today. The full report on the inspection will appear on the D.E.S. website and also on our own website in due course. D. Cleary.

Proclamation Day
2016-03-17

Maree school held a celebration of Proclamation Day on Tuesday, March 15th. The event began with an assembly in the school hall. Mr Cleary, school principal, addressed the children and parents who had gathered for the event. He welcomed everybody and extended a special welcome to Michael John Burke, a local historian and also to Mrs Bridie Pettit, a former principal of the school. Mr Cleary gave the background history of the Irish flag and some of the children read a part of the 1916 Proclamation and also their own proclamations which they composed especially for the day. {gallery}proclamation_day_2016{/gallery} The old proclamation from Tawin Island school was also on display courtesy of local Tawin resident, Padraig Holland. Following this everybody moved outside where Mrs Pettit and Mr Cleary planted a tree to commemorate the day and the people who had fought in 1916. Next came the flag raising. Michael John did the honours and a huge cheer went up when the flag reached full mast. The children then sang 'The Foggy Dews' and played 'The Dawning of the Days' in the brilliant March sunshine. The day finished with a rendition of the National Anthem played by Jacqui Keane accompanied by Ms Brna Smyth, Oisn Holland, Diarmuid O'Donoghue and Rebecca Monaghan. The poem 'The Mothers' by Padraig Pearse was read beautifully by 5th class pupil, Molly Whelehan. The day was a wonderful success and was enjoyed by all.

School Notice - 4 February 2016
2016-02-04

Head lice: It has been brought to my attention that head lice are a problem in the school. This year seems to be particularly bad. It is essential that all parents check their child's hair and treat. Maree Fun Run: Sunday, February 7 commencing at 12 noon. See posters for details. Late arrivals: I am asking parents to ensure that children are on time for school. The school opens at 8.35am to receive pupils. They assemble under supervision in the GP hall until 8.50am at which time they are picked up by their class teacher. This system works well but we have an ongoing problem with late arrivers. Children who arrive after 8.50am are disrupting classes that are settled in and already beginning their day's work. It can also have an effect on a child's confidence when they join a class late in the morning and are out of sync with what is going on in the classroom, plus it is a bad habit for late in college, the workplace, etc. I also note from CCTV that some parents (particularly late arrivers) are using the staff parking area as set-down. For the safety of your child and the other children please use the Community Centre car park or the designated set-down to the right hand side as you enter the main gates. Many thanks for your cooperation in this. Oranmore Maree Fis: Sunday, March 13 in Calasanctius College. The Oranmore Maree Fis Committee would welcome assistance with bag packing in Supervalu Oranmore on Saturday, February 6. Phone or text Cathy, 087 643 6188. Credit Union Quiz: Congratulations to the quiz teams who represented the school and did really well in the St. Columba's Credit Union Quiz. School closures: Reminder mid-term break: February 18th & 19th; Election: Friday, February 26th.

School Notice - 13 November 2015
2015-11-11

Dear Parents Our current Board of Management is nearing the end of its term and we are beginning the process of establishing the Board of Management for 2015-2019. The Board consists of nominees from across the school community as well as two independent community nominees. Individuals do not act as representatives for the group from which they are nominated on the Board. The Board is a corporate body, meaning that all eight members, when appointed, act together as a unit. The Board requires the highest level of confidentiality at all times and all members agree to maintain confidentiality around the business of the Board, as highly sensitive issues may arise from time to time. In considering membership of the BOM from within the school community it is important to consider the skills that are useful and very much needed on our Board. It is desirable that our nominees have skills in an area such as accountancy/finance, legal issues, health and safety, aspects of building and construction, etc. as each Board member is required to contribute to a particular area and may be assigned a role in a given area as required by the Board. Whilst the Board of Management is a legal body and membership is on a voluntary basis, it is important to note that the Board and individual members of the Board are indemnified for any claims made against them under section 14(7) of the Education Act 1998, provided that they are acting in good faith and within the provisions of the Education Act, the Rules and Procedures for Boards of Management and Rules for National Schools. Under the rules for the Board of Management of National Schools, two parent nominees (one male and one female) must be elected for the four-year term of office of the next Board. I invite interested parents to attend a meeting with me on Thursday, November 19th at 7.30pm at the school. I would like to thank on your behalf, outgoing nominees Claire Joyce who served for the full term of the Board, and Pat Fitzmaurice who served from 2011-2014, and Keith Kelly who replaced Pat in 2014. Claire is not seeking re-election. Looking forward to seeing you on the night. Yours sincerely, Marie Killilea, Chairperson.

School Notice - 3 November 2015

Parent/Teacher meetings will take place on Wednesday, November 18th and Thursday, November 19th. School closes on those days at 2.15pm so that meetings can start at 2.30pm. Appointment times will be issued early next week.

Fr Richie Higgins
2015-10-06

It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Fr Richie Higgins. As a mark of respect the Parents' Association AGM scheduled for tonight has been postponed until Tuesday October 13th at 8.30pm in the school. Joe Keaney, Chairperson, Maree Parents Assoc.

Fr. Richie Higgins RIP
2015-10-06

It was with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of Fr. Richie Higgins. Fr. Richie was a remarkable man Maree school and particularly the children always had a special place in his heart. When I spoke to him in the hospital a few days ago to enquire how he was his reply was "I'm fine. Tell me, have you the books got for the First Holy Communion class?". That was Richie to the core, always thinking of the children. During his first stint in Maree in the eighties and early nineties, Fr Richie chaired the Board of Management and he oversaw the building of the three-room extension to the old school as well as the acquisition of land from Maree Development Association and from the late Maureen Long. On his second coming to Maree in recent years he took great pleasure in watching the new school being built and, even though he wasns't directly involved, he was thrilled to see Maree receiving a state of the art, new school. He visited us regularly. He loved to visit and the children loved to see him coming. He never forgot us for confession, blessing of throats, Ash Wednesday, school masses and so on. One of the highlights of the year for him was always the First Holy Communion. He was delighted to be involved this year in the first ever Confirmation ceremony to take place in Maree. When he celebrated his 80th birthday last year he arrived with chocolates for all the children. He got great pleasure in reading the cards the children had made for him and he had them all posted on the wall of Maree Community Centre on the night of his party. He always had a great sense of humour and he got a great kick out of one particular card which depicted him as a spiky haired, medallion-wearing, cool young dude with a convertible sports car and ray-bans. Every Christmas Fr Richie went to the ends of the earth to organize Santa to visit the church with selection boxes for all the children. He was also enormously generous towards the altar servers and made sure they got a reward for all their hard work during the year. (It was he who introduced the first female altar servers to Maree in the early nineties)Being a true and proud Athenry man he had a great interest in hurling and always loved to hear tales of how the Maree kids got on in their school camogie and hurling matches. He enjoyed the chat at coffee break about all matters GAA and especially about the prospects of Galway Senior hurlers. While I mentioned at the start that there is sorrow at the news of his passing, we the staff, students, parents and Board of Management are also celebrating the wonderful life of a man we were honoured and blessed to have had in our midst. When Fr Richie arrives at the great gates he will probably comment to St Peter that the said gates could do with a lick of paint and he will no doubt suggest that he will organize a few volunteers to do the job and maybe even get someone to sponsor the paint. Solas na bhflaitheas ar anam Richie agus go dtuga Dia suaimhneas sora d.

School Notice - 1 October 2015
2015-10-02

Reverse Parking: We ask that all parents reverse into their parking slot when they arrive at Maree Centre as it is much safer when you are driving forward rather than trying to reverse out of a parking slot when there are children coming from all sides. Babor: Junior, Senior Infants will be going to Babor Children's Theatre on Thurs 15th Oct. 1st & 2nd Classes will be going on Fri 16th Oct. 3rd & 4th classes will be going on Tues 13th Oct. 5th & 6th classes will be going on Wed 14th Oct. Thanks to the funding received from the Parents' Association, the cost per child is only 5. Please send this to the class teacher a.s.a.p. Coat labels: Please take the time this weekend to put your child's initials on his/her labels. AGM will take place at 8.30pm on Tuesday October 6th. All are welcome to attend. Our PA has been one of the most active, positive and vibrant in the county over the past few years. It provides a great forum for new parents to meet and form new friends while at the same time supporting the school in delivering a quality experience for your child. D. Cleary

Please put the money for each child in an envelope and return to the class teacher. It is easier to keep account if each child is paid for separately. School Notice - 13 May 2015
2015-05-14

Communion: Congrats to the boys and girls of second class who made their First Communion on Saturday last. They were a credit to their families and their school. We are indebted to the many people who worked hard to prepare the children. A big thank you to their teachers Miss Reidy and Mrs Corry, and the brilliant choir, our musicians Padraic and Liam, to the parents who helped with the 'Do this in Memory Programme', and to Fr Richie for all his care. Thanks also to Della, Mary and Jimmy for having the church looking so lovely, to the servers who served Mass on the day and to the parents of third class for the wonderful party in the Centre afterwards. Confirmation: Maree Church on May 20th at 3pm. Morning Safety Duty: We have eased up on morning duty for the moment but we feel that the 2.30pm pick-up needs monitoring for a while longer. Reverse Parking: We ask that all parents reverse into their parking slot when they arrive at Maree Centre (before the children come out from school) as it is much safer when you are driving forward, rather than trying to reverse out of a parking slot when there are children coming from all sides. Talk to your children. It would be useful if all parents could continue as you always do to advise your children not to run at any time in the car park and to exercise caution around cars. Once again my thanks to the volunteers who have been so dedicated to helping with traffic duty but ultimately it is up to each parent/guardian to take responsibility for the safety of his/her child/children. School Photographer: Ik Mellick, school photographer, will be here on Thursday, June 4th to have your child's/family photograph taken. Head Lice: It has been brought to my attention that head lice are a problem in the school. I am urging all parents to check their child's hair and treat. Reminder: School closures: Friday, May 22nd (Election); Friday, May 29th (School Holiday) and Monday, June 1st (Bank Holiday). D. Cleary.

Open Day at Maree NS
2015-04-23

My thanks to all who took time on Sunday to come in and view our lovely new school. The people of Maree have always been proud of their school whether they have children attending or not. It was our pleasure to host them for a cup of tea and a chat on this occasion and to welcome them to have a look around. There are many people whom I would like to thank and acknowledge for their help with this and many other occasions in support of our school. Firstly I thank the Parents' Association for all their work in preparing the GP Room and for catering for the event not just today but on many occasions throughout the year. We have always been blessed in Maree with parental support and this group under the leadership of Joe Keaney are flying the flag of that tradition very highly indeed. Their help and the help of the parents in general when we moved our belongings from the old school to the new was invaluable and we deeply appreciate it I also thank the many parents who baked/provided cakes etc for the open morning. The building is testament to the expertise of McNamara Construction. It has been a pleasure working with them to date and we are looking forward to working with them over the next couple of months while they demolish the old school and restore the play area. In this regard the site manager, James Mannion, deserves honourable mention for his professionalism and for keeping patience with me with the many requests he has received over the construction period. I would also like to say that each and every one of the lads who worked on site were at all times courteous towards the children and staff. We are also indebted to the Maree Community Development Association for the use of their facilities over the years and particularly over the past fourteen months. Currently we are using the tennis court and the MCDA car park during play times while our own playground is being built. Our thanks also to the tennis club for allowing us to share their splendid facilities. The school staff have been very patient and in particular over the past year as we were tightened in to a smaller space. They now have the facilities that they well deserve. Our Board of Management members (past and present) have been very supportive and have worked hard-against the odds at times-to make the dream a reality. Like the Parents' Association, they are all volunteers but they all have the interest of the children at heart. I have mentioned in the past how fortunate we were to get access to the rear of the site. Both the MCDA and Willie Moran were more than willing to allow us this access for the sake of the safety of the children. Without this help our project would have gone on much longer and there would have been bigger safety issues for the builder due to the fact that he would have had to access the site from the front. Our 'minders' who have donned the high vis vests to help get the children in and out safely since the school became a building site have been exceptionally dedicated. In this regard Claire Joyce deserves great credit for drawing up and sending out the rota every single Sunday. It goes without saying that our Design Team were extremely professional from start to finish. The building speaks for itself in this regard. Many people have commented favourably on the architecture which was led by Brian Fahy of Simon J Kelly and Partners (Galway) but it must also be stated that the other consultants played a massive role in the process. We thank the lads from Aecom (Galway) who did the Quantity Surveying, Malone O'Regan (Galway) who looked after the the Civil Engineering and Semple McKillop (Co Monaghan) who were responsible for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Our lovely new flagpoles at the front of the school which are flying the school flag, the club flag and the Galway flag are courtesy of generous sponsorship received from Grealy's Stores in Maree. Over the years John, Sally and staff have always been there for us when we needed anything. A good example of this (which is only one of many) is the new batch of barrows we got on loan for our big move. We have also received sponsorship from Mattie Egan on behalf of the Maree/Tawin Committee. This money will go towards our new raised flower beds in the new playground. A school would not be a school without its young population. We are immensely proud of the children and it was priceless to see their faces and worth every bit of the graft when they got their first tour of the new school before Easter and again when they returned after the Easter Holidays for their first day in the new school. Our first week has been very exciting for the children and this is the most important thing of all. They and their teachers have the space and facilities that are the envy of many a school all over the country but it is no more than they all deserve after such a long and patient wait. Once again my thanks to all who called in on our Open Day and said a kind word or two. We greatly appreciate your visit. Le dea-ghu, Dermot.

The Big Day
2015-04-12

Tomorrow marks a massive milestone in the history of Maree school. When we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the old school four years ago, much of the talk centred around the children's first day at the old school. We al tried to imagine from Michael John Burke's article, how those children walked down the road to the school, watched as the blessing was done and walked in to their modern, new school. And it was a modern new school back then. We read in the pages of the old roll book the names of the pupils who were in each class at the time. We found that we knew many of them as grandparents, neighbours, etc of our current population. Tomorrow we ourselves write a new chapter in history. In fifty years time, the children of Maree school will read our names in the database or roll book, and they will try to imagine the excitement we felt as we moved to our state of the art school. For us the old school was a happy place of learning and fun, and we look forward to more of the same in our new school. As advised on our notice, we will be open to receive pupils at 8.35am. The children will assemble in their designated line in the P.E. hall. At 8.50am, each teacher will take his/her class to their classroom. Please cooperate fully with the parents on traffic duty outside at the four entrances to the school. Their function is to enhance the safety of the children, which is of the utmost importance to us. Le dea ghu.

The Big Move
2015-03-29

My thanks to the teachers, the parents, the members of our Board of Management and all who came along on Saturday March 28th to help to move our belongings from the old school to the new building. Thanks to the lads from McNamara Construction who were on hand from early morning to facilitate the big move. As ever we are indebted to Grealys Stores who gave us a loan of a large number of barrows to assist with the movement of all our stuff.Once again we saw an example of something we have seen many times in the past, the 'Maree generosity of spirit', where no task is too great and help is given willingly. I would like to thank Joe Keaney in particular, who met with me to hatch the plan of action and rounded up the troops to get the job done with little or no fuss. Despite the enormity of the task there was the usual fun and banter because at the back of everybody's mind was the thought of our special people, the children, who will be returning after Easter to their lovely new surroundings. mle buochas do na tuismitheoir agus gach duine a chuidigh linn leis an mbogadh go dt r bhfirgneamh lainn nuathgtha.Tgfaimid cuimhn speisialta inr gcro linn n seanscoil agus beidh siad againn go deo. School Notice - 26 March 2015
2015-03-26

History in the making: At long last we are ready to move into our lovely new school. After the Easter holidays a new era will begin for the children, staff and parents of Maree N.S. I would like to acknowledge everybody for the help I have received over the past twelve months and I would like to compliment the staff and children for putting up with less than ideal conditions. That said, the builders carried on their work very unobtrusively and a huge thank you is owed to them also. The old school has been a very happy place and I have no doubt the new one will be even better. First Day Back: Class starts in the new school at 8.50am on Monday, April 13th. The school will be open to receive pupils at the hour of 8.35am. Once the school opens the children will be shown to the GP hall where they will have a designated line-up area. The class teacher will collect their class from the line at 8.50am. Pick up in the afternoon will be at the pedestrian entrance from the Community Centre. Traffic Arrangements: The Parents' Association newsletter (due out on April 13th) will detail the arrangements for drop-off and pick-up when we are in the new school. I request that you read the document carefully and give full co-operation. It is all in the interest of the safety of our children. My thanks to the P.A. for their work on this and indeed to all our volunteers who have helped on traffic duty since September. Helpers: My thanks to the Parents' Association who have organised helpers for our move this coming Saturday, March 28th. We may need to call on others over the Easter holidays, so if you are available please send in your name and number with your child tomorrow. Parade: Congrats to all who were involved in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. It was a wonderful display on the day. Well done to all who helped prepare for it and to all who took part on the day. Reminder: As per the calendar the school closes tomorrow, Friday 27th at 12 noon. Happy Easter: On behalf of the staff and BOM, I woud like to wish all our children and their families a very happy Easter. D. Cleary

Thank you so much to all of the children that have signed up for participation in the parade. We will be meeting at 2.45pm on Tuesday, March 17th in the car park of the Oran Town Centre. Please note: If your child is in Junior of Senior Infants, they must be accompanied by a Parent or Guardian for the duration of the parade. Remember, afterwards every guardian has to pick up their child from the church car park. Most of all, have a great time and get your mums and dads to dress up too. -Parents' Association

Cleary.

A message from Féis na nÓg committee
2015-03-09

Féis na nÓg has been growing steadily over the years and is, as far as we are aware, the only community event of its type in Ireland. We would love to see schools/communities in other areas getting together to put on their own Féis na nÓg. The Féis has come to the attention of TV Channel Irish TV (which Is'm sure many of you are aware of). Through Barbara Forde, a long standing committee member, the TV Channel has expressed an interest to come and film highlights of the Féis. This is a fantastic opportunity to promote the Féis via the medium of TV and we hope to perhaps have TG4 and Nationwide take an interest in other years. Irish TV Television Station brings programmes from every county in Ireland to our TV and Computer screens 24 hours a day covering music, sport, religion, and all types of shows running in small communities throughout Ireland. It is a wonderful channel available to us all to advertise and air important and interesting events that happen in our area. These programmes are available for anyone in the world to tune in and see a little of Ireland at a glance. Even our Taoiseach Enda Kenny visited the Irish TV studio in October last year! The aim is to film snippets of the Féis and interview some of the judges, students and a few others telling their own story of what the Féis means to them. The idea is to get an overall feeling of the Irish culture being passed on to the young and the talent that has developed as a result of the Féis. This is a fun idea and we hope you think so too and that you will all enjoy the experience. In the interest of equality and so that no school stands out more than others we would ask that school uniforms NOT be worn on this occasion. If anyone has any issues regarding this venture you are very welcome to contact any of the committee to discuss same. You can view this TV station on Sky 191 or on Channel 400 manual tuning frequency or by just typing in Irish TV on your computer.

School Notice - 5 February 2015
2015-02-07

Building News: After a long wait there are exciting times ahead for the children, staff and all associated with Maree NS as we will shortly be moving in to our fabulous new building. On a weekend in late February or early March we will be transferring our equipment with the help of our parent body from the old to the new school. For health and safety reasons not everybody will be able to be on site that day. However, there will be an opportunity on some Saturday afternoon later in march for everybody to come for a look around. Obviously we will have an official opening day much later in the year when the groundwork is fully complete, but meanwhile our informal open day in March will give everybody a chance to come in and enjoy a cup of tea and look around the new building. We will be looking forward to meeting past-pupils, parishioners, friends and so forth. Exciting times indeed. -Dermot.

School Notice - 5 November 2014
2014-11-05

Strictly Come Dancing: As you are aware, Dearbhala Hanniffy and Ronan Diviney are representing us in this year's Strictly Come Dancing. The Maree Community Development Association (MCDA) is trying to raise funds for ongoing work at Maree Community Centre and pitches as well as for the Saving Grace Fund. This is our opportunity to support MCDA given that they have accommodated us with the use of their facilities and particularly as they have allowed us access through their ground to the rear of our building side. If we did not have this access the traffic problems in the morning would be immense and the safety of the children would be a concern. We will also be depending on the MCDA facilities in February when the children have moved into our new school and the old school is being demolished/new playground developed, etc. I am asking for every family to sending in 5 to the school before Friday, November 21 and I will vote for our couple of your behalf. I cannot overstate how much the MCDA have done to help us. Our children will be in a lovely, bright, new, state-of-art school in February 2015 so please take this opportunity to support. Parent Teacher Meetings: Parent Teacher Meetings take place on Wednesday, November 26 and Thursday, November 27. School closes on those days at 2.15pm so that meetings can start at 2.30pm. You will be given a time-slot for your meeting shortly. Traffic: My thanks to Claire Joyce and the parents who are helping in the mornings and afternoons to get the children in and out to school. Please use the Community Centre to drop off and collect. Do not set down on the roadway outside the main entrance. Head Lice: It has been brought to my attention that head lice are a serious problem in fifth class. I am urging all parents to check their child's hair and treat where necessary. D. Cleary

Oranmore-Maree Camogie Team Win County Intermediate Final
2014-10-27

Congratulations to Oranmore-Maree Camogie on winning the County Intermediate Final today in Loughrea. This was a remarkable display of courage and work rate by the girls who felt that they deserved better than a draw last time out. What is important now is that they have the cup they truly deserve. {gallery}intermediate_camogie_october_2014{/gallery} The management team of Tony, John and Angela have dedicated every spare minute of their time to training and preparing this team since last January. Every girl from number 1 to 30 deserve great credit for their effort. It was great to see such a turnout of support from the Parish, and also to see the rising stars from the club playing the half-time exhibition. We are now a senior club. Our dedicated officers deserve this. Roll on the Connacht Final next Saturday!

Maree Boys Win Garda 7s
2014-10-20

Maree school is indebted to the Garda of Gort and Loughrea area for inviting the boys to take part in the blitz. Maree boys had a great win last Friday in the Gort Garda seven-a-side football competition. {gallery}garda_7s_october_2014{/gallery} This was their first year to take part in the football competition and it was a great achievement to lift the Division 1 trophy at the first time of asking. Great credit must go to Mr Anthony Broderick who has put in a huge amount of time in training the boys since September 1st when he joined the staff of the school.

School Notice - 2 October 2014
2014-10-05

Parents' Association: The AGM of the Maree NS Parents' Association takes place on October 8th at 8:30pm in the school. We have a very active and supportive PA in the school and I would encourage all parents to come along and join. It is a great way to get to know new people and to support the work of the teachers and the children. Traffic Duty: Many thanks to the parents who are helping in the mornings and afternoons to keep an eye over the children as they enter and exit. Please note that these parents are acting merely as helpers and that the primary responsibility for the safety of the child still rests with the parent/minder who is dropping or collecting. We would ask that all motorists drive slowly and exercise extreme caution when approaching/leaving the area where the child is being dropped off or collected. Shingles: There has been a case of shingles in the school and your child may have been exposed. Useful information on shingles can be found here. Baboro: Junior, Senior Infants and Second Class will be going to Baboro Children's Theatre on Monday, October 13th. Fifth and Sixth Classes will be going to their show on Tuesday, October 14th. Third and Fourth Classes will be going on Thursday, October 16th. First Class will be going to their show on November 6th. Thanks to the funding received from the Parents' Association, the cost of each show is subsidised and the children only have to pay 5, which covers the cost of the buses. D. Cleary

School Notice - 17 September 2014
2014-09-18

Strictly Come Dancing: Maree Community Development Association (MCDA) is running Strictly Come Dancing again this year to raise funds for ongoing maintenance of the Community Centre and pitches, and also the Saving Grace Fund. We are delighted to announce that the school is being represented this year by Derbhala Hannify (Caitlin, 1st class and Cathal, Junior Infants) and Ronan Diviney (Roisn, Senior Infants). I would like to see all parents row in behind Ronan and Dearbhala particularly this year as we have benefited so much from the help of the MCDA who have allowed us access to the building site through their grounds. This has enabled us to carry on with the building of our fabulous new school safely with minimal disruption. We also make full use of the sports and recreation facilities in the Community Centre now that our own play area is restricted. Strictly Come Dancing is a great opportunity for us to acknowledge all the assistance of the MCDA. Head Lice: Please ensure that you check your child's hair regularly for head lice and treat if necessary. We have also requested in the past that long hair be tied up as this should help prevent lice from hopping from one head to the next. Traffic Wardens: My thanks to the people who have been doing safety duty, but we need more volunteers. If you can assist please give your name to Claire Joyce (086 8835959). Golf Classic: The Maree NS Parents' Association is holding the annual golf classic in Galway Bay Golf Club on Friday, September 19th and Saturday, September 20th. All money raised will go directly to the school so we would ask the community to support this exciting event. All bookings, please phone Joe on 086 1733738. On behalf of the Board of Management and staff I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all members of our school community. A particular word of welcome to our new pupils and our new teacher, Mr. Broderick. It promises to be an exciting year for the school as we will be moving into our new building in February 2015. In the meantime we all have to work together to make the best of our restricted accommodation, play areas, etc. Please take note of the following information and arrangements for tomorrow morning (Monday, September 1st). Classes: Fourth and Fifth class are in the new cabins at the front of the school. Miss Kelly's Infants are in the first room on the right when you enter the main building. To get to Miss Fahy's class, walk down the corridor and turn left to the room at the end of the hallway. First class are in the room next to Miss Reidy's. There has been no change to the location of other classes. Traffic: There will be members of the Parents' Association on hand in the morning to manage the traffic at Maree Community Centre (MCC). We will also have parents helping move children safely down to the school from MCC. Please exercise care and co-operate with these stewards. Parents of new Junior Infants should park in the MCC carpark and walk down to the school with their child on this very special day. If it is a fine morning weather wise it may be a good idea for parents of other classes to consider 'parking and striding' from Maree old pitch, or anywhere you might have used for our previous walking days. School Times: School finishes at 12 noon all this week for Junior Infants, Senior Infants at 1:30pm and all others at 2:30pm as normal. Looking forward to a landmark year ahead. D. Cleary

5-a-side Soccer Win!
2014-04-08

Maree N.S. had a great win today in the Aviva 5-a-side soccer County Finals in Drom. Following relatively easy victories over Claregalway and Carnmore schools in the group stages, Maree squared up to a very strong Lisheenkyle outfit in the final. {gallery}5-a-side-soccer-apr-2014{/gallery} Lisheenkyle opened the scoring in the first half but their celebrations had barely died down when Maree drew level. The game was tight for much of the remainder but the Maree boys added two further goals to ensure a first ever victory for the school in the Boys' soccer competition. (The school has three titles in the Girls' competition, '03 '06 and '13 so a victory for the boys was long overdue). The boys now go on to contest the Connacht finals in Shiven Rovers grounds in Newbridge, Co. Galway on May 7th.

School Notice - 4 February 2014
2014-02-05

Building work is about to start in the next couple of days within our school grounds. We have managed to secure access to the rear of the building site thanks to the Maree Community Development Association (MCDA) and also to William & Sheila Moran who own the land at the back of the school. The vast majority of the construction traffic will be entering and exiting via the community centre exit (the exit furthest from the shop). The traffic will then continue behind the astro turf and in to the school site via the Moran's land. The builder, the MCDA and the school management have had several discussions around health and safety in relation to all this activity. We have also managed to maintain our gravel path to the front of the school, for the moment at least, so that the children may walk from the Community Centre to the school without going on to the main road. The builder will have an entrance to the front of the site, which will cut through out path. However there will be no building traffic allowed to use this entrance during school opening and finishing times. In any case it is expected that the rear entrance to the site will be the main one used by the builders for the present. Your co-operation in all safety matters when dropping off and collecting children is much appreciated.

Building Commencement
2014-01-20

The Board of Management is delighted to announce the appointment of John McNamara and Sons as building contractor for our new school. {gallery}new_building{/gallery} The building work is expected to commence in the next few weeks. The new, state-of-the-art school will be constructed within the site of the current school where our hurling pitch is. This section of the site will be cordoned off and the current school will operate as normal, albeit with reduced play space for the duration of the construction period. Upon completion of the new building, the existing school structure will be demolished to make way for play areas, a basketball court and pitch. We ask the full co-operation of the parents and whole school community in relation to safety when dropping off and collecting children during construction. I would like to personally thank each member of the Board of Management (including past members) for persisting over many years with our application for improved facilities for the children and staff of Maree NS. Exciting times ahead. D. Cleary

Galway Bay FM and St Vincent de Paul say thanks: Una Molloy from Galway Bay FM newsroom has expressed her thanks on behalf of the radio station and society of St Vincent de Paul for the massive response from the children of Maree school to the food appeal for Galway's needy people. Well done to all. Cyber Bullying Talk: Fifth and sixth classes received a talk on Tuesday, December 17th from a guest speaker, Brendan Smith, on cyber bullying. Brendan's talk was most interesting and informative. He gave the children a great history of communication and also an insight into the way technology is advancing. Among his strong messages was the danger of putting up comments etc on social media. He also emphasised then eed to tell if you are being bullied, and he gave the reassurance that the Garda and authorities now have more power than ever before to track down anonymous cyber bullies. Nativity Play: The Nativity Play with second class is on Thursday, December 19th at 7.30pm in the Church. All welcome. I would like to thank the staff, the BOM and you, the parents, for all your support during 2013, and to wish you and your children a very happy and peaceful Christmas. D. Cleary

Past pupil Ailish O'Reilly stars for Galway Seniors.
2013-09-17

Timid an-bhrdi̼il ar fad aisti. Our photo shows Ailish with the current camogie crop (many of whom will wear the maroon jersey at some stage or other) during her visit on the Friday before the big game. {gallery}ailish_oreilly_stars_for_galway_seniors{/gallery} When Ailish was in Senior Infants her school day finished at 1.30pm but her minder used to bring her back to school at 2.30pm for camogie training days with the 'big' girls. Is it any wonder that this young lady was one of the key players for Galway Seniors all through this years championship? Ailish brought huge honours to the school in her time in Maree, the most noteworthy being the Mini Sevens County football title in 2006 as well as the County 9-a-side Camogie title in the same year. In what has to be the proudest day in the sporting history of Maree National School, our past pupil from the class of 2006, Ailish O'Reilly, played a leading role for Galway Senior Camogie team in their All Ireland victory over Kilkenny on Sunday September 15th.

School Notice - 11 September 2013
2013-09-11

Welcome: As the school year beings I would like to extend a warm welcome to everybody. We welcome in particular our new Junior Infants and also Kian Keavey who has joined 3rd class. Safety: We request that parents use the Community Centre car park when dropping off/collecting children. The children may then use the side entrance path to the school. Please also encourage your child to exercise caution in the car park particularly when cars are reversing etc. Under no circumstances should anybody park on the yellow lines in front of the school gate to drop children off. It is also very dangerous to park across the road from the school and to allow a child to cross the road. Our primary concern is the safety of your child. All-Ireland Camogie Final: Best of luck to our past pupil Ailish O'Reilly who lines out in the forwards for Galway Senior Camogie team on Sunday 15th. Ailish captained our school team to victory in 2006 and has multiple honours for camogie, basketball and Gaelic football. Go n-ir go geal lei agus le foirneann na Gaillimhe. Fionn Duffy Takes Gold for Maree NS
2013-03-12

Fionn Duffy took a gold medal, becoming the Under 12 Irish Schools Champion in 50 metre breaststroke, at the Irish Minor Schools Championships in Leisureland on Sunday, touching only two hundredths of a second ahead of the Belfast swimmer in silver position. Earlier, Fionn had been pipped to the butterfly gold by one tenth of a second. {gallery}fionn_swimming_medal_13{/gallery} This is Maree NS's first national schools swimming title. The event featured regional provincial qualifiers from all over the island, and competition was fierce. Fionn swims with Galway Swimming Club, and already at 12 years of age is up at 5am three mornings a week, and does five training sessions a week. He is the third of the Duffy boys, all former Maree NS pupils, to take up swimming. Cian, now 18 and doing Leaving Certificate in Yeats College, represented Ireland for the first time as a senior international in November 2012, at the European Short Course Championships in Chartres, France. Cian currently holds over 20 Irish and Connacht swimming records, and is the Galway Sports Star for swimming in 2013. Oisn (16), who is in fifth year in Calasanctius, is no slouch in the pool either, and joined Cian on the Galway Swimming Club relay team that broke the Connacht 200m freestyle record in December 2012. So if you are coming home late at 5am someday, and you see the lights on in the Duffy residence, just remember the dedication that competitive swimming requires. As you fall into bed, the Duffys are getting up!

2013-01-31

We wish Marie Ni Bhroin and Derek Glynn, representing Maree National school, the very best of luck on Saturday night in Strictly Come Dancing. The event takes place at 7.30pm in Maree Community Centre. It has been a sell-out show since word went out that Derek was participating. Fair play to him for managing to bringing Marie up to his excellent standards.

School Notice - 24 January 2013
2013-01-24

Music in the Classroom: 5th & 6th class enjoyed a recent trip to Leisureland in Galway for a performance by the RTE Concert Orchestra. Our thanks to the Parents' Association for the funds, which enabled us to subsidise the cost of the outing. All funds raised by the Parents' Association are used to benefit the children in various ways throughout the year. We appreciate the support of you, the parents, for all those events. Strictly Come Dancing: Sat 2nd Feb - 7.30pm, Maree Community Centre. With a little over a week left to go to the big night, I am inviting all parents to show their support for Marie and Derek who represent Maree School. If you are not attending on the night you can still help them to get over the line by sending in 2 per vote to the school. I will gladly vote on your behalf on the night. While we have undoubtedly the two best dancers we are the poorest when it comes to financial support. Please do your bit to save Marie's & Derek's blushes. Recycling: We need to redouble our efforts to become more environmentally aware in the coming months. Our landfill bin has been bursting at the seams in recent months which means we have slipped back considerably on where we were a year ago. The following are some ways you can help: Use a lunchbox if you are not already doing so (this cuts down on foil & paper wrapping); Encourage your child to bring home any uneaten food in his/her lunchbox. Head Lice: We have had problems with head lice recently in three different classrooms. Please ensure that you check regularly and treat if necessary. We have also requested in the past that long hair be tied up as this should help to prevent lice from hopping from one head to the next. Money Found: A small sum of money was found in the community centre car park. Please contact the office.

Past Pupil on Late Late Show
2012-12-07

Make sure to tune into the Late Late Show tonight from 9.30pm. Our past pupil Jamie Harrison and friends will be performing Tiny Dancer - a song for Lily Mae at some point during the night. Lily Mae Morrison (4) from Claregalway, Co Galway, is recovering following a life-saving operation to have a large tumour, which was twisted around her kidney, removed. The staff and pupils of Maree school are very proud of what this noble young man has done for this cause since it was first brought to his attention by his sister Katy in early summer.

Past pupils Niamh Hanniffy, Richard Noonan and Eanna Corry as well as Stephen Flanagan from Oranmore did a great job in refereeing the recent mini 7s hurling competition in Oranmore. {gallery}junior_whistlers_october_2012{/gallery} The final was a repeat of the recent football final, a shootout betweeen Maree N.S. and Oranmore B.N.S. This time it was a reversal of the football result with Oranmore winning with a couple of points to spare. We wish the Maree team and the Oranmore team the best in the County Finals in Spring 2013.

School Notice - 16 October 2012
2012-10-16

Parent Teacher Meetings: P/T meetings will be held on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd of November. You will be given your time slot in advance. Babor: 1st & 2nd classes will be going to Babor Children's Theatre on Wed 17th and 3rd & 4th classes will be going on Fri 19th Oct. Thanks to the funding received from the Parents' Association, the children only have to pay 2 which covers the cost of the buses. Other classes will benefit from the funding at some other time during the year. Building: Our proposed new school building project is still making progress. We have received notification from Galway Co. Co. of intention to grant planning permission. We should have full planning permission before the Halloween break. The Design Team is in the process of preparing tender documents etc. so we are hoping that the Department will allow us to progress to invitation to tender. However this will be dependent on available funding. Parents' Association: The Parents' Association is holding a meeting on Wednesday October 17th at 8.30 pm in the school. There was a low turnout at the AGM so I would urge more parents to come along on Wednesday. The P.A. plays a vital role in supporting the work of the school and your child benefits from this. It is also a great way for parents to meet other parents. The meeting will be held in Ms. Sinnott's prefab to the rear of the school and it should not be a long meeting so please come along if you have a half an hour to spare. Congratulations: Congratulations to Evan Os'Rourke, 3rd class, who was mascot for the Irish soccer team last Friday. To the school camogie & boys' football teams who won their blitzes last week to qualify for the County Mini 7's Finals in Spring. Personal belongings: Please take time this week to put your child's name or initials on his/her jacket, track-suit tops etc. We always have unclaimed clothing at the end of the year so even their initials would be a help.

Our Irish Mascot

School Notice - 27 September 2012
2012-09-28

Parents' Association A.G.M.: Parents' Association A.G.M. will take place on Wednesday 03/10/2012 at 8pm in the school. The P.A. plays a very important role in supporting the school so a good attendance would be welcome. My thanks to the outgoing members for another very productive year in 2011 / 2012. Maroon Day: Best of luck to Ailish and Niall in their All Ireland replays at the weekend. This is a proud day for Maree school as we are one of only a handful of schools in the county with a player on both Galway teams at the weekend. Please encourage your child to wear something maroon and white tomorrow Friday 28th to show support for the lads. See the article 'The 16th Man' on the school website. Confirmation: Confirmation Date is 12.4.2013 in Oranmore at 11am. Art, Craft, Photocopying: My thanks to all families who have paid their 30 per child fee for the above. A reminder to those who may have forgotten to pay it to please send it in an envelope to your child's teacher at your earliest convenience.

The 16th Man
2012-09-26

Please wear maroon and white to work, school, college etc. on Friday 28th Sept to show your support for the lads. {gallery}maroon_white_day_2012{/gallery} Kilkenny have the big day experience while Galway are on relatively new territory. This is where you, the 16th man/person come in. The sound that reverberated around Croke Park when the lads marched around before the drawn game was very uplifting for the Galway players. Likewise the colour that adorns almost every house and workplace in the county will give the boys a great boost as they depart for Dublin. Come on out and support them with a big splash on Friday.

Best of Luck to Ailish and Niall
2012-09-25

What a weekend this is going to be for our past pupils Ailish O'Reilly and Niall Burke. Ailish plays in the All Ireland Intermediate Camogie Final on Saturday 29th Sept in Ashbourne, while Niall plays in the All Ireland Senior Hurling Final on Sunday in Croke Park. We are extremely proud of both of them and we hope that it will be a double celebration.

Good Luck to Niall Burke
2012-09-06

The staff and pupils of Maree NS would like to wish our past pupil Niall Burke the very best of luck in next Sunday's All Ireland Senior Hurling Final. {gallery}good_luck_niall_burke_060912{/gallery} Niall's potential was in evidence while he was attending Maree NS. He won a county school medal while still only in 4th class and was an integral part in Maree's best ever mini 7's hurling team that was unlucky to lose out to a classy Loughrea team in the mini 7's final of 2003. Niall's mother Nonie and his dad Michael were always very positive and supportive parents when Niall and younger brother Eanna attended Maree school. We wish this fine young man from Blackweir and his family the very best on Sunday.

School Notice - 05 September 2012
2012-09-05

Welcome: As the school year begins I would like to extend a warm welcome to everybody. We welcome in particular our new Junior Infants and also our new entrants who have joined other classes throughout the school. We hope all will be happy in our school during the year ahead. School Building Update: Our application is still in the Planning Department, Galway County Council. We had some requests over the Summer for further information on the road safety arrangements for the proposed new building. These have been addressed by the Design Team and the Board of Management so hopefully we will be granted planning permission within the next few weeks. Please note that, while this is a major step in the right direction, it is by no means a guarantee that the Department will progress us to tender immediately given the current economic climate. Past pupils to be proud of: Well done to Niamh Hanniffy and Galway U-16 footballers on winning the All Ireland A final in August. This is Niamh's second All Ireland medal in this year alone. Best of luck to Ailish Os'Reilly who is currently starring with Galway Intermediate Camogie team. Their All Ireland Final is coming up in a couple of weeks time. Lest we forget, Galway take on Kilkenny in the All Ireland Senior hurling final on Sunday 9th September. We wish past pupil Niall Burke who plays at centre-forward the very best of luck in what will be a big occasion. Please encourage your child to wear something maroon and white on Friday 7th. Please note that any adult attempting to enter the school premises wearing black and amber will be refused entry. School Calendar: The school calendar is now available on the school website here. You will be notified if there are any changes.

County Final Double: Congrats to the school hurling and camogie teams who won a historic and fantastic double in the County finals last week. My thanks to Breda, Cathal and Ann for their dedication to coaching the teams throughout the year. See this week's paper - page 24. Golf Classic: Many thanks to the Parents' Association and in particular to Joe Keaney for organising a very enjoyable Golf Classic last Friday. Thanks also to Ms. Sinnott and Ms. Hannon for putting up with all the disruption to their classes during our path to the finals. Building update: The current status of our building project is that we are at Stage 2B. We have applied for planning permission which will take a number of weeks to be granted. Camogie Team make it to County Final
2012-05-28

Maree girls put in a splendid display of camogie in Craughwell today to qualify for the county final. They came up against a very strong Carnmore team in the opening match and were pushed all the way to the final whistle. Carnmore had beaten them comprehensively a couple of weeks back in the early stages of the group but this time the Maree girls held on for a deserved one point win over their neighbours. Next up were Kilnadeema who had come through a very tough test against Mountbellew in their first match. The Maree girls got a dream start and led by three goals at half time. In fairness this was not a fair reflection on the efforts of the Kilnadeema girls who came out in the second half and threw everything at their opponents. However the Maree rearguard held firm and went on to win and qualify for a final showdown with Craughwell on June 15th. Great credit is due to Breda and Ann for all the hours of work they put in to training the girls. Regardless of the result in the final this has been a magnificent year for them, having come runners-up in the Mini 7s Finals a few weeks ago

Maree Boys Through To Hurling Final
2012-05-26

Well done to Mr Duffy and to Maree boys hurling team who are through to the Cumann na mBunscol hurling final. A group that included Athenry Boys N.S., Carnmore N.S., Claregalway N.S. and Maree N.S. was always going to be a tough assignment but every single player and substitute stood up to the task today in Maree's magnificent new grounds to emerge victorious and go forward to their first school hurling final since 2006. The final will be held on Wednesday June 13th in Kilconeiron. Our opponents ,we believe, will be Killimor who have come through from the other half of the group. Maree will be confident of doing well but will take nothing for granted against a team from one of Galway's hurling strongholds. Well done boys, we are very proud of your achievements so far.

Maree Girls are Runners Up in County 11-A-Side Football
2012-05-17

Well done to Maree girls who finished runners-up in the County 11-a-side football blitz held on Thursday May 17th in Oranmore. Maree defeated Galway Educate Together in the first game with a spirited performance from the entire team. Next up came Scoil Mhuire, Oranmore and, with the bragging rights at stake with their club teammates, the Maree girls knew they were up against it. However Maree dug in and finished with a bit to spare to qualify for the final. Their final opponents were Barna who had vast club experience compared to their challengers. The Maree team gave it their all but had to settle for silver medals as Barna ran out winners in spite of a stiff challenge from their opponents. Well done to all and especially to Breda Hanniffy and Ann Nolan who put a huge amount of work into preparing the girls during the year.

Fis: Congrats to all the children who participated with great success in the Fis on Sunday 11.3.12. Well done to the committee, the teachers, parents and indeed anybody who helped to ensure the success of the event. Photos are available here. School Debating: Congrats to Cathal Connolly, Grainne Galvin and Mary Joyce who represented us in the recent debate in Oranmore library. They successfully opposed the motion that 'crime does not pay'. The final takes place next week. All of 6th class participated in in-house debating for the past few months under the direction of Ms. Margaret Martin. They benefited greatly and the overall standard was excellent. Parking/Drop off: Please reinforce with your child the need to be extremely careful in the community centre car park while being dropped off/collected. Some children have a tendency to run to or from the car and this obviously could lead to an accident. We have had Garda Alan Keane speak to the children about safety but it would be of benefit if parents consolidated the message. Confirmation: 6th class will be making their Confirmation on Tuesday 27th March in Oranmore. Please note that the school closes at 1pm on that day for all children. Easter Holidays: Please note the school closes at 12 noon on Fri 30th March as per school calendar.

New Building: I am pleased to report that the plans for the new building are progressing well. We are still on track to have a planning application made to Galway County Council shortly. Meanwhile there will be an archaeological investigation on the site very soon so if you see a JCB it doesns't mean we have started on the foundation yet. However we have had no hold-ups in our preparations during 2011 so I am optimistic that this will continue. Table Quiz: The Parent's Association is holding a table quiz on Friday 24th Feb at 8.30 pm in Maree Centre. Please note that every euro raised will go to funding the extra activities that your child benefits from in the school. Your support is much appreciated. Parking: Despite repeated requests some parents/minders are still parking on the yellow lines directly in front of the school. This is very inconsiderate and dangerous to our young population. Please leave this area clear at all times. Head Lice: No recession with the head lice. Please check your child's hair and treat if necessary. FAI Soccer: Well done to Declan Gill, Adam Rooney and Jack Morrissey who reached a very high standard in the recent All Ireland Soccer competition.

School Notice - 06 October 2011
2011-10-06

Confirmation Date: Tuesday March 27th 2012 at 11am in Oranmore Communion date: Saturday May 19th 2012 at 11am in Maree Parking: We are seriously concerned for the safety of the children during the morning and afternoon drop-off and pick up. We would ask that under no circumstances should anybody park on the yellow lines at the front of the school. It is much safer to drop children off in the Community Centre car park close to the side gate entrance to the school. Please also exercise caution entering and exiting the car park as there is always a danger that a child will run across in front of a car. Concerns were also raised at the recent Parents' Association A.G.M. about people parking across the road from the school and allowing children to run across. This is an accident waiting to happen and I sincerely hope that this practice will be discontinued immediately. Maree Fun Day: Congrats to the M.C.D.A. on the splendid new facilities to the rear of the Community Centre. We are privileged to have the use of such a fine asset on our doorstep.

School History
2011-09-01

Gurraun National School The Education Act of 1831 established the National Schools in Ireland. Gurraun National School was set up in 1833 with Lord Wallscourt of Ardfry as its Patron. By 1835 there were five schools in the parish of Ballinacourty (Maree). Two of those were in Gurraun Upper, probably close to where the old school is situated. It was a two-room school, with one room for boys and one for girls. The boys had 69 pupils on the roll with an average attendance of 36 and the girls had 51 and an average of 36. Across the road in Gurraun Lower there was another school with 42 attending and an average of 35 pupils attending. This school was held in the Catholic Church there at the time. In 1839, the night of the Big Wind, the roof was blown off this building and was never repaired. There was also a school in the townland of Ballinacourty with an average attendance of 50. Another school in Tawin had only been in existence for eight months and had an attendance of 26 pupils. {gallery}school_history{/gallery} The following subjects were taught in all the schools: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic and Catechism. The girl's school also taught needlework and making fishing nets, while Irish was only taught in the school held in the Church the only one of the five to teach that subject. A new school was built in Gurraun in 1854/5. The primary valuation of the country known as Griffith's Valuation indicates it was in the course of construction at the time. It was reconstructed in 1879; this date is shown on the plaque at the front of the building. The present school was built in 1960 on a site donated by the late Willie Long who lived up the road, however it was not opened until November 1961. The day of the opening we all went to the old school and the roll was called. Later in the morning we walked up the road to the new school and lined up each side of the path which leads from the road to the school, boys on one side and girls on the other, forming a Guard of Honour to await the arrival of the Bishop of Galway Dr. Michael Browne. I dons't remember if there was a tape cutting, Dr. Brown performed a blessing ceremony and some photographs were taken. I dons't think there were any parents or politicians present, as would be the norm today. This school was a great change from what we were used to, new modern toilets and cloakrooms, new desks, and outside there was a concrete playground and shelter and also a little pitch. Finally we were given the rest of the day off and we all went home. Our thanks to Michael John Burke, a local historian, for furnishing us with the above account. 50 Years (1961-2011) In June 2011 we published a magazine to celebrate our 50th Birthday. New Pirates of Penzance: Best of luck to the cast and crew of The New Pirates of Penzance which runs in Kilcornan Centre, Clarinbridge from tomorrow Wednesday 1.5.11 nightly until Saturday 14.5.11 at 8pm. A special word of encouragement and congratulations to our third class who are involved in the show. Tickets are selling out fast. See posters all around Maree for details. Confirmation: 6th class will be making their Confirmation on Tuesday 24th May in Oranmore. Please note that the school closes at 1pm on that day for all children. W.O.W. (Walk on Wednesday) Day: Next Wednesday 18.5.11 is a W.O.W (Walk on Wednesday) day, weather permitting. It would be great if as many people as possible could walk/park and stride to school on that day. School Birthday: As you know we are celebrating the school's 50th birthday in June this year. The Parents Association are doing trojan work in preparation for this event. We are still looking for old photographs of anything to do with the school (e.g. Fiseanna, sport, Communion, Confirmation, sports day, first day at school etc). We are particularly interested in material from the 60's, 70's or 80's as this is obviously harder to come by. However any photo from the past fifty years would be appreciated. If you put your name on the back of the photo and include information about the photo, it will be scanned and returned to you within a few days.

Safety Outside School: Despite numerous requests in the past not to do so, some parents are still parking on the yellow lines outside the school to drop off /pick up children. This is absolutely unacceptable as it is posing a danger to other children who are approaching or exiting the school on foot. I might also add that it is an extremely dangerous practice to park across the road from the school and have children run across. Please heed this notice as the safety of every child and adult is of paramount importance. Note from Ms. Sinead Killeen: Dear Parents, As you may know I moved to Roscommon in July for family reasons. Unfortunately this meant leaving my job in Maree which was a very difficult decision for me to make. I was very lucky to get a permanent job in Roscommon in October. I just want to say a big thank you for all the support and kindness I was shown in my thirteen years in Maree. I enjoyed every bit of my time in Maree National School and I will miss you, the children and the teachers very much. I wish you all the very best and maybe I'll bump into you sometime in the future. Yours sincerely, Sinad Killeen. Enrolment: It is vitally important that anybody who has a child who has not yet started school should fill an application for enrolment even if the child is only a few months old. We expect to have a higher demand for places from now on so an early enrolment is essential. Internet Safety: The Parents' Association have booked a speaker for next Wednesday evening, 9th Feb at 7.30 pm in the school. I cannot over emphasize the importance of a full attendance at this meeting as it will be very informative and helpful. Speaking as a parent myself, I dons't think any of us can be over-educated in this area regardless of what age our children are.

Strictly thank you: Many thanks to all who supported Martina Keaney and Tom Kearney in the final of Strictly Come Dancing held in Maree Community Centre on Saturday night. We are extremely proud of them as they finished in the top three and helped to raise much needed funds for Maree Development Association. Maree school had a unique claim to all couples as at least one half of each couple were current or past parents and indeed very good friends and supporters of our school. So well done to all who took to the floor for what was a brilliant show of the highest standard. Many thanks to you all for your financial support on the night. Articles for our newsletter: Many of the children participate in competitions with their own clubs & societies at weekends etc. We would often be unaware of their achievements so we would appreciate if our attention was drawn to these so that we could acknowledge them in our newsletter.

We wish Martina and Tom the very best (hopefully they can stay on their feet) and, on your behalf I would like to thank them for taking the risk of making a show of themselves for a very worthy cause! Best of luck also to all the competitors (break a leg) and to the Maree Development Association for all their fine work on the new facilities. Remember it's for all our children. Mothers' Nominee to the Board of Management: Just a reminder of the meeting tomorrow (Thurs 25 th at 8pm) to nominate a mother to the vacancy in the B.O.M. This trip gave the children the opportunity to connect the research and learning which took place in the classroom with the natural world outside. It would not have been possible without the generous involvement of parents who worked in partnership with the children and teacher. Enthusiastic exploration took place, research books were consulted and samples collected. The trip proved to be both educational and very enjoyable as the photos confirm! {gallery}seashore_visit_09{/gallery}

School Notice - 30 September 2009
2009-09-30

Calendar Amendment: School closes at 2.30pm on Friday 23rd October and not at 12 noon as stated on the Calendar. Parent Teacher Meetings: The Parent Teacher Meeting will take place on Thursday 15 th Oct and on Thursday 22nd Oct from 1pm onwards. All children go home at 1pm on both days. We will issue time slots for each family. Parking: In the interest of safety please do not park or set down on the yellow lines at the front of the school. It is also unadvisable to park across the road from the school as there is always a danger that a child may run across the road. The Community Centre car park and the school pathway are the safest access to the school. I would also request that people refrain from turning their cars in the driveway of the private house across from the school. Again there is an option to turn at the Pitch Road or the Community Centre. Thank you for your cooperation in this.

They have reached the Galway County Final for the first time in over 20 years and we wish them well on Sunday 4.10.09 in the final.

You can have a free expert check to see that your child car seat is fitted correctly. Please see notice in school front porch. All Ireland Minor Final: Congrats to our two past pupils Niall Burke and Jamie Harrison on winning the All Ireland Minor Hurling Final on Sunday. These lads and their class colleagues showed great promise when they played for Maree school team from 2002 to 2004. It is great to see them getting rewarded for their dedication. These lads have been well looked after in Oranmore Maree Club over the years by Brendan Bannon & his management team. So well done also to the Club. We hope to have a visit during the week from the minor lads with the Irish Press Cup.

2009-09-07

Welcome: I would like to welcome everybody back and wish you well for a happy year ahead. Particular welcome goes to our new Junior Infants and to Tom and Cathal who are new to 3 rd and 4 th class respectively. Swine Flu: It is vitally important that any child or adult who is suffering from Swine flu or suspected swine flu not enter the school building. We have provided, tissues, posters, information and lesson plans for every class to try to reduce the risk to the children and ourselves. We ask that parents support the efforts being made by the school by explaining the correct way to use and dispose of the tissue when coughing or sneezing. We are aware that most parents have already done this. Parents may wish to provide individual washbags for their child containing a small face towel and personal hand sanitizer. It is important to inform the school if you or your children have been in contact with a confirmed case of Swine Flu. This information will enable those with underlying medical conditions to take the necessary precautions. Lisbon Treaty: As the school is a polling station, we will be closed on Friday 02.10.09 Staff Meeting: There will be a staff meeting on Friday 11 th Sept. at 1pm. All children go home at 1pm on that day.

Maree NS Take Camogie Honours
2009-07-04

Maree N.S. claimed the County 11A Camogie title when they defeated Creagh N.S. in the final played recently in Craughwell. The winners led by 3-2 to 0-0 at the break with the goals from Danielle Cleary(2) and Fiona Reidy Nishio (1) with Niamh Hanniffy and Shannon Costello raising white flags. Cait Bourke struck Maree's first goal in the second half before Mary Geraghty opened Creagh's account with a goal in the 10th minute. However Danielle Cleary added two further goals for the Maree girls to leave the final score Maree 6-2 Creagh 1-0. {gallery}cumann_na_mbunscol_09{/gallery} This was an outstanding team performance from the Maree girls. Shannon Connolly was solid in goals. Defenders Fallyn Walker and Tara Costello were very tight at the back and they were ably supported by Eimear O Donovan and Roisn McInerney. Niamh Hanniffy and Eilis Hogan controlled mid-field while up front Shannon Costello and Danielle Cleary combined very well to make life difficult for the Creagh backs. Fiona Nishio and Jamaine Geoghegan gave it everything while substitutes Cait Bourke , Sinead Connolly , Eimear Caulfield and Ciara Bourke all played a huge part in this great victory. Maree N.S. are victorious over St Patrick's of Tuam The Maree N.S. boy's football squad showed an excellent display of skill and determination to arrive undefeated at the 11 a side top division football final. The boys and one girl, Niamh Hanniffy, were proudly led out onto the pitch in Loughgeorge by Tim Carroll and Eoin Fogarty. The whole team were excited and energetic as they ran out to face St Patrick's of Tuam. {gallery}schools_football_final_09{/gallery} After an exciting first half the Maree team led by 4 points. The second half although exhausting for the team was played with skill and enthusiasm bringing the Maree squad to victory with a score of Maree 4 / 7 to St Patrick's 3 / 3 at the final whistle. Congratulations to all the team and everyone involved in helping this team to reach their potential and win the final.

First Holy Communion: Congratulations to the boys and girls from 2nd class who made their First Holy Communion on Saturday. A big thank you to the choir, the teachers, the parents who helped with the Do This in Memory programme and to the parents of 3rd class who funded and served the lovely refreshments in the Community Centre after mass. A special word of thanks to Fr Peter who made the occasion very special for the boys & girls. School Football: Well done to the boys who have made it through to the County Football 11A Final to be held in Loughgeorge on Wednesday next 3.06.09. Best of luck to them and to Mr. Duffy who has put in a huge amount of work in coaching the boys for the past two years. School Camogie: Congrats also to the girls who are through to the Schools 11A Camogie Final after very good wins over old rivals Killeeneen, Clarinbridge & Carnmore in the group stages. School Tours: The school tours for 1st to 6th classes take place on Friday 5th June. Junior and Senior Infants have no school on that day.School Tour for Junior and Senior Infants takes place on Friday 19th June during school hours. All other classes have school as usual on the 19th. Our thanks to the Parents Association for subsidising the tours for this year. Enrolments: We still have a few places left in Junior Infants Class for Sept 2009. For the long-term we would need those few more to maintain our current staffing levels. Road Safety/Walk on Wednesdays: We would ask all drivers to exercise caution on the roads, particularly in the mornings. More and more children are beginning to walk and cycle to school and this is a most welcome thing. However the issue of safety is a concern so we would hope that greater consideration be given to our young road-users so that hey arrive to school and get home safely. School Photographer: Ick Mellick, school photographer, will be here on Thursday 4th June. Please ensure that you have returned the slip indicating whether or not you wish to have photographs taken. If you have not returned a slip it will be presumed that you do not wish to have a photograph taken.

Working Bee: Many thanks to all who helped with preparing the Church Grounds for the upcoming First Holy Communion. We had ten pairs of hands on deck for this 'Working Bee' and the results speak for themselves. We can look forward to a similar day very soon in the school. Sport: The girls had a very good win over Killeeneen NS in their first camogie match while the boys easily disposed of Oughterard in their first football game. Well done to them. First Confession: Congratulations to 2nd class on making their First Confession today. (I'm sure Fr Peter is still in shock at the sins). Best of luck to them in their upcoming First Holy Communion. Hopefully it will be a fine day.

School Notice - 19 March 2009
2009-03-19

St. Patrick's Day Parade A big thank you to all involved in making our entry to the St. Patrick's Day parade so colourful and spectacular. The feedback has been very positive and complimentary. A huge amount of work went in to the costumes and props but the end result and the outstanding performance on the day made the effort worthwhile for those involved. Well done to the parents, teachers and children on a fine job. {gallery}st_patricks_day_09{/gallery} Damage to school property: It is disheartening to have to report the unwelcome visit we had to the school premises on Saturday night/Sunday morning 14th/15th of March. A small number of teenagers came on to the school grounds between 11.30pm and 12.30pm and caused extensive damage to the goalposts. Apart from the cost factor, it is an unwanted disruption at a time of year when we are running a football league and preparing for upcoming camogie, hurling and football competitions. The footage from the CCTV cameras is being examined. Needless to say any information on the identity of the visitors would be welcomed. Our thanks to the GAA club for the loan of a set of posts for the lunch-hour league. Mini sevens finals: Best of luck to Mr. Duffy and the boys who are competing in the County Mini Sevens Football Finals next week in Claregalway. Fis: Congrats to all who took part in the Fis in the Maree Community Centre at the weekend. Well done to the hard-working committee for keeping the show on the road. The Fis was a great success and set the tone for the weekend ahead of the parade.

School Notice - 10 March 2009

Last Friday's Mass for Tara Sheridan was lovely. My thanks to Fr Peter, the choir, the readers and to the teachers who prepared the liturgy. Thanks to all the parents who turned out for this special occasion. Well done to all the children who showed such great respect throughout the entire ceremony. Slapped cheek syndrome (fifth disease): There has been a case of slapped cheek syndrome (fifth disease) in your child's school and your child may have been exposed. While it is not listed as one of the conditions which we are obliged to inform parents about, it is at the same time contagious. See below a website which you may find useful or alternatively you could google "Parvovirus B19". See www.medic8.com. From my reading on it, there is nothing to be alarmed about as it appears to be a mild condition, but at the same time I would advise that you take a look at the website and inform yourself about it. St. Patrick's Day Parade: Our thanks to all the parents, teachers and children who are working so hard in preparation for next Tuesday's St. Patrick's Day Parade. It would be nice to see a large turnout of parents on the day to support the children. Mini Sevens: Well done to Mr. Duffy and the boys who qualified for the County Mini Sevens Finals by beating Craughwell N.S. and a very strong Oranmore B.N.S. team on Thursday 5.03.09 in Oranmore. We wish them well in the final.

School Notice - 10 February 2009
2009-02-10

Tin Whistle classes: Tin whistle classes with Jacqui Mc Carthy are well under way for this term for 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th classes. The fee for the term is 15. Please place it in an envelope & send to the class teacher asap. Charity Fundraiser: Well done to Ms. Killeen and 4 th class and to all classes who took part in the talent show 'Maree's got talents' just before the Christmas Holidays. Over 400 was raised for Cancer Care West and The National Children's Hospital. Thanks to the Maree Development Association for the use of the hall on the day and to all who supported these very worthy charities. Hair Lice: Despite repeated appeals, some children are still not being checked/treated for head lice. Please take time this weekend to check your child's hair thoroughly as lice is still a major problem in the school School Tours: The school tours for 2009 have been arranged for Friday 5 th of June. Junior and Senior Infants have no school on that day. Their tour is on a separate day during normal school hours. The tour to Breaffy House involves a whole day of P.E. activities in small groups with qualified instructors. Green Schools: Ms Sinnott and the Green Schools Committee are continuing their excellent work on environmental issues. 'Travels' is the theme for this term's project. We would appreciate your feedback in the first instance on whether you would be interested in encouraging your child to walk or cycle to school on at least one or two days per week. We have a very good chance of getting grant aid for a cycle stand but would need to be sure of how many people might make use of it so that we know how many spaces to put in etc. Please send a note to Ms. Sinnott if you think your child might be cycling to school this Spring when the weather improves. Enrolments: Enrolments are currently being taken for September 2009. As you are aware we currently have 8 mainstream class teachers. This means we have one teacher per class which is ideal and avoids the need for splitting classes. Due to changes made in the Budget, and the strong possibility of further cuts, we need to ensure that our enrolment in infants for September 2009 is strong. If you know of any family who are new to the area or anybody who may not be enrolled I would appreciate it if you could ask them to phone the school to make an appointment to enrol their child. It is in everybody's interest that we maintain our current staffing level. Staff Meeting: There will be a staff meeting on Wednesday 18.02.09 at 1 pm. All children go home at 1pm on that day. Mid term Break: As per previous notices and School Calendar, please note that the school will be closed on Thursday 19 th and Friday 20 th of February for mid-term break.

School Notice - 23 October 2008
2008-10-23

Parent Teacher Meeting: Thursday 20/11/08 starting at 1pm.

HSE: The School Nurse will be here on Monday 03/11/08 to do screening (Vision & Hearing) on Junior Infants, Senior Infants, First Class and Sixth Class.

Hair Lice: November Break next week is an ideal opportunity to check and treat as necessary for head lice. Should any parent wish to meet the School Nurse when she visits on 03/11/08, please let me know and I will try to arrange it.

First Holy Communion: 23/05/09 at 11am in Maree Church.
Revised Calendar: Please note amended dates.
Budget 2009: I wish to express our disappointment at the cuts in education in the government's budget. Of major concern to schools is the threat to staffing levels. While we are not in immediate danger, it must be said that the budget proposal on staffing will have an impact in the not too distant future unless the current proposal on staffing levels is reversed. Currently we have one teacher per class, which is the ideal situation. Should we lose a teacher we wold be in a situation where, not alone would there be a bigger number per class, but there would be splitting of classes which is not ideal.
We will be hearing more in the next few weeks and your support will be needed in lobbying the minister to urgently request that he abandon this and other proposed education cuts.

School Notice - 07 October 2008
2008-10-07

Calendar Change: Please note the following: School will be closed on Friday 1st May 2009, instead of Friday 29th May 2009. A revised Calendar will issue shortly. Please also see www.mareens.ie/calendar for changes. School Building: There has been no major change in the news on our proposed school extension. We have been assured by Frank Fahy that the projects which received approval last year (including ours) will be progressed ahead of any new applications which are coming on stream. However the question of when we can proceed still remains. Science Workshop: The Parents' Association has kindly agreed to fund the visit of a Science Workshop to the scvhool which is a fun/hands-on way of learning Science for all classes from Junior Infants to 6th. Sewing Class: Sewing class has begun for 4th class with Mary Finn & Noreen Dooley. There has been huge interest shown and we intend to do a block of 6 weeks with 3rd, 5th & 6th class over the coming months.

Food Dudes
2008-01-04

Maree NS is delighted to announce the launch of a successful new venture in healthy eating called 'Food Dudes'. Food Dudes is a programme developed by the University of Wales, Bangor, to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is based on positive role models (the Food Dudes characters), repeated tasting and rewards. In large-scale studies in schools in England and Wales and pilot studies in schools in Ireland, the Programme has been shown to be effective and results long lasting across the primary age range, regardless of gender, school size, geographic and socio-economic factors. It is ultimately designed to enable children to enjoy eating healthy diets, and to create a healthy eating culture within schools. For more information, visit: www.fooddudes.ie

Welcome: As the school year begins I would like to extend a warm welcome to everybody. We welcome in particular our new junior infants and also Jonah O'Halloran (1st class) and Ava Tynan (3rd class). Cad mle filte also to Mr. Anthony Broderick, 6th class teacher. Confirmation Date: May 20th, 2015 at 3pm. In a break with tradition, Confirmation takes place in Maree Church in May next year. Building: As you can see the new school has progressed greatly over the summer. While the programme fell behind by three weeks due to the Roadstone strike, the builders made up for this to some degree by progressing work on the entrance as well as the polishing filter at the rear of the old school. We are still well on course for completion by February 2015, weather permitting. Site Safety: Many thanks to the parents who have been on safety duty getting the children in and out to school. If any parent can assist, please give you name to Claire Joyce (086-8835959). If we have sufficient numbers you should only have to do a turn occasionally and we could continue the system for a longer period of time. The children are to be complimented for their co-operation. Please continue to encourage them to exercise care while walking, cycling, etc. D. Cleary.
